Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is commonly used to describe a number of conditions where the symptom are mainly aches, pains and strains in the upper body of users of display screen equipment. The condition is also known as work related upper limb disorder (WRULD) and categorised as a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD).

The condition is caused by bad posture, overuse, and repetition resulting in stress being placed on the body.

To prevent users of display screen equipment from getting an RSI condition, employers should ensure all workstations meet the minimum requirements as stipulated in the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations. This includes carrying out workstation assessments and providing training in both the use of equipment and workstation.

Once a user has been diagnosed with an RSI condition by a medical practitioner there are a number of conventional treatments available including physiotherapy, medication and in extreme cases surgery. There are also complementary therapies available including massage, yoga and acupuncture.
